News Accreditation scheme launched to recognise HR departments that ‘go the extra mile’
CIPD’s new People Development Partner status will help employers professionalise their people function and build their brand.
A new accreditation scheme has been launched to acknowledge organisations working in partnership with the CIPD to continually raise the level of expertise within their HR and L&D teams.
The People Development Partner status will be awarded to employers that have shown they are champions of the profession by providing entry-level HR jobs, continually support teams through training and development, and worked alongside the CIPD in its research and policy work.
Organisations will also have to demonstrate a commitment to the ongoing professionalism of their people professionals through qualifications and CIPD membership.
The CIPD has also launched a profession map to help organisations on their way to gaining the accreditation, guiding them through changes in the sector.
Adam Stanbury, head of employer solutions at the CIPD, said the inspiration for introducing this partner status was to ensure the HR profession was “as good as it can be”, and hoped to see the sector collaborate as a collective to champion better work and working lives.
“HR and L&D spend all of their time investing in everyone else and not in themselves, we want to make sure they have currency in their own professional practice,” said Stanbury.
“We wanted to recognise those organisations going the extra mile and enabling people to have ongoing professionalism.”
Stanbury said the accreditation would be a boost organisations’ employer brands, helping them to attract and retain talent, as well as ensure HR functions were working to a high level of professionalism.
“Some organisations are already doing a number of things to meet the criteria and wouldn’t be far away from getting recognition, others may be at the start of their journey but we would work with them to help them reach their goals,” said Stanbury.
“Organisations would work with a CIPD relationship manager to align their practice to our standards. We will support organisations based on the challenges they face, alongside wider issues in the industry.”
The retailer Tesco was announced as the first organisation to achieve the People Development Partner status, having worked over a number of years to develop its HR capability and confidence.

“They have further developed their passion, energy and confidence, and by being engaged themselves they have become ambassadors for continuous improvement and learning across Tesco.”
