Big Give Announces Dates for Christmas Challenge 2017

The Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign, will open for applications from UK registered charities on 5 June.

The Big Give is an online donation platform that profiles the work of thousands of UK-registered charities and inspires people to give. It was founded in 2007 by Sir Alec Reed, the chairman of the Reed Foundation, who saw the need for a site where people who wanted to give could be matched with charities that were seeking funding.

Since the Big Give Christmas Challenge opened in December 2008, it has raised more than £78 million for more than 2,800 charities. Last year alone, the Challenge raised more than £7.2 million for 332 charities in seven days.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge takes place for a short period, usually in early December. This year it will run from 28 November to 5 December 2017. During this time, the supporters of the participating charities can have their donation doubled. For example, a £100 online donation made to a participating charity during the Christmas Challenge can be doubled to become £200.

To be eligible to apply, charities must:

  • Be registered in the UK or have exempt status from HMRC.
  • Be registered on the BigGive.org.uk. (Registration is free.)
  • Have an annual income of £25,000 or more (as per last filed accounts).
  • Have at least one year of filed accounts.

The dates for this year’s Christmas Challenge are as follows:

  • Stage 1 application will be accepted: 5 June – 7 July.
  • Stage 2 application (pledge collection): 5 June – 1 September.
  • Notification: 18 September – 6 October.
  • Christmas Challenge: 28 November – 5 December.

All donations (including Gift Aid) made on the Big Give website are subject to a 4% fee. This fee is charged by Big Give’s payments processor, Charities Trust, a registered charity.

Full details, including a list of the confirmed Champions (the match funders) and their restrictions, can be found on the Big Give website.
